Kenya Railways Announces 50% Fare Hike for Nairobi to Mombasa SGR

The Kenya Railways has recently declared a 50 percent increase in fares for passengers traveling on the Nairobi to Mombasa SGR route, effective from January 1, 2024. This fare adjustment also impacts commuters using the Nairobi commuter rail service and the Kisumu and Nanyuki safari trains.

According to a statement released by the Kenya Railways management, passengers journeying from Nairobi to Mombasa will now be charged Sh1,500 for economy class and Sh4,500 for first class, up from the previous rates of Sh1,000 and Sh3,000 respectively. The management clarified that this decision was influenced by changes in the energy and petroleum sector, leading to a significant rise in fuel prices and subsequently affecting the cost of their operations.

Travelers purchasing tickets in advance for the Madaraka Express passenger service will witness the revised fares from today. Here are some of the adjusted fares:

  • Nairobi to Mariakani (Sh4,310)
  • Athi River to Mombasa (Sh4,340)
